Canterbury Deaf Youth originally started in early 2012, with Rachel Berry, Katherine Hickson, and Matthew Flynn motivated to take on the responsibility of helping ensure Deaf and Hard of Hearing youth through out Canterbury get to experience what being around your own people should really feel like. Mid 2012, four new leaders (Benazir Kumar, Cruze Kapa, Hanna Deal and Jenna Holland) decided to lend a helping hand. Today we are a formed group of 7. Along the way we received help from one of the previous Canterbury Deaf Youth Committee, Phillip King and the Canterbury Community Development support person who works under Deaf Aotearoa - Della Buzzard. They have supported this youth group hugely by providing all the necessary training courses that we have since then taken the training to ensure we are good at what we do. We create events for our youth to participate, connect and feel at home with people like them. We have taken part in some of Magnet's (National Deaf Youth Organisation) camps. We work closely with Magnet and we are looking at forming a network system with Auckland and Otago Deaf Youth. Our goals are to ensure the use of NZSL (New Zealand Sign Language), Deaf culture, identity, and community strengthen as we continue to develop this youth group.
